Gritting routes in rural and west Sheffield to be slashed

by joeotten on 15 July, 2014

In a bid to save money on the winter gritting budget the council is proposing to end preventative gritting on many ‘secondary routes’ in much of rural Sheffield and in the west.

The full proposals can be found here https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/roads/travel/winter.html but in Dore and Totley, the routes lost include Dore Road, and Sunnyvale Avenue and Road with access to Totley Primary school. This goes against the stated criteria of maintaining access to schools – a point to raise in the consultation.

There is also a review of the number and location of grit bins (although no specific proposals are being consulted upon) and a decision to end the snow warden programme in all but name. No new snow wardens will be recruited, and existing snow wardens, although they may continue to operate, will have no practical support in terms of grit, equipment or training.
